Have you ever wondered while listening to songs of Afsana (1951),
who wrote them ? Not many would say 'yes'. We usually care less
for lyricist, an equally important entity in making of a film
song. Well, yesterday was a death anniversary of this poet who
wrote some beautiful songs that enthralled people for over 4
decades, and yet the day passed almost unnoticed! Yes, yesterday
was Asad Bhopali's anniversary, and here is his gem composed by
master H. Behl and sung wholeheartedly by Rafi
#207
Song: Zindagi Bhar Gam, Judaai Ka Muze Tadpaaega
Har Nayaa Mausam Puraa~~ni Yaad Le Kar Aayega
Film: Miss Bombay (1957)
Music: Hansraj Behl
Lyrics: Asad Bhopali
Singer: Mohammad Rafi
*ing: Ajit, Nalini Jayvant, Rehman
I have heard two versions of this song. One that apparently seems
to have it's source the original soundtrack and the other, 78 rpm
record. Former has "inline" whisperings of Ajit? and Nalini
Jaywant; other one obviously doesn't have them. In any case,
full marks to Rafi for singing it so well. His voice modulation
and resultant oscillations are treat to ears. Interludes using
saarangi, violin and sitar are very good and brings the pathos
out, remarkably well. Few songs have, such an effective
orchestration. It's a true gem in all faceds.
Other equally good number was this Rafi solo penned by another
versatile song writer of yore -- Prem Dhawan
Le Chalaa Ye Dil Jidhar Nikal Pade
???? ??? ????? Zamaana Le? Chale
Jo Saath Waqt Ke Chalaa Wo Mard? Hai
Jo Reh Gayaa Wo Raaste Ki Gard? Hai
But this beautiful song has remained in shadow of today's ATMJH.
This song has very soothing music on rhythm of a police band!
After a while, Rafi's voice is fresh - a good change. I guess, I
have shared this view earlier as well; with excuse let me repeat
it: Hansraj Behl was probably the only composer around, who used
all singers and all of them in the best possible ways in their
respective ranges. He commands highest level of respect from me
and many others.
Finally the only duet I know from the film. It was sung by Rafi
and Suman Hemadi (Kalyanpur). A related question -- since when
she assumed this last name in professional singing ? The song was
this:
Chahe? Din Ho Raat, Hum Rahen Paas Paas, Ye Hamaari
Marazi
Tumhaari Bhi Yahi Hai To, Hamaari Bhi Yehi Hai Marazi~~
This is the only song of Suman Kalyapur, where her delivery
reminds the charm and style of Geeta Roy! Her thin voice, is of
course way different than Geeta's. This playful song is surely
one of her best duets ever.
